Step 1: Apply for a Marriage License

The first step is applying for a marriage license in the state where your ceremony will be held. In Washington, you can apply for a marriage license at any county auditor’s office. Most counties allow you to apply online, and there is a mandatory 3-day waiting period before the license becomes valid. It’s good for 60 days and costs around $60–$70, depending on the county. You do not need to be a Washington resident to get married here.

In Oregon, marriage licenses are also issued by county clerks, and many counties offer an online application option. Oregon requires a 3-day waiting period as well, unless you pay a small fee to waive it. The license is valid for 60 days and typically costs about $60. You don’t have to live in Oregon to get married there either.

In Northern California, marriage licenses are available at any county clerk’s office. There is no waiting period, and the license is valid for 90 days. Costs vary by county, usually around $90. You can choose between a public or confidential license, and residency is not required.

Step 2: Choose an Officiant

To make your marriage legally binding, you’ll need an officiant to perform the ceremony and sign your license. You can hire a professional officiant, ask a friend or family member to get ordained online (which is very common for elopements), or work with a judge or religious official. Online ordination through sites like Universal Life Church is quick, easy, and legally recognized in Washington, Oregon, and California.
